When speaking to employers, we often hear that they are intending to implement appraisals “soon”, but they haven’t got round to it yet. Other employers tell us that appraisals are a waste of valuable time and they either don’t bother to conduct them or merely go through the motions.

However, appraisals have the potential to be an extremely useful tool. If you are dismissing an employee on competence grounds, you will need to produce evidence of their poor performance. Whilst other data, such as sales performance or customer complaints can prove helpful, a diligent appraisal process that is conducted at regular intervals will provide clear evidence of performance problems. A manager or supervisor will be able to document any discussions that are held in relation to issues as and when they occur.

It is, of course, vital for appraisals to be conducted honestly. There is little to be gained from an appraiser compiling positive reports that are unduly flattering. Equally, if any issues are identified then measures should be implemented to address these. If these measures are taken, but performance still does not improve, the employer will be in a much stronger position with regards to establishing that a dismissal is fair. Similarly, giving someone a low score in a redundancy situation will require evidence of a similar nature.
