Barriers to Shared Parental Leave

A report from ACAS has suggested that over 87% of men want to ‘split leave following the birth of their child with the mother’, but there could be barriers that prevent them from doing so.
Nearly a third of men surveyed responded that they thought their manager would not be understanding, a fifth felt that their colleagues would make fun of them and a similar proportion feared they would be overlooked for promotion if they took the time off. The law is very clear on this and there is explicit protection afforded to employees taking Shared Parental Leave (SPL). Employees who seek to take SPL must not face detriment as a result of doing so.
If one of your employees were to face such detriment, it could prove to be extremely costly for your company. As this is something you wish to avoid, ensure that you have a clear policy that states your procedures in unambiguous language that is followed in practice. Not only will this educate management as to the best way to proceed, it will also relax and reassure any employees who might wish to take SPL.
