Tea Breaks

Following various media reports about an apparent fall in the demand for black tea in the UK, ACAS have released a note regarding the British institution of the workplace brew. They state that the average British worker enjoys four cups of tea every work day – a figure that suggests the workplace cuppa is still alive and well.

So… what obligations does your company have in this respect?

Contrary to what many employees perceive, you do not have to provide staff with hot drinks or the means to make them. Whilst you may wish to provide milk, teabags and coffee (and, given the emotional attachment many workers have to their hot drinks, this may be a sound business proposition!) this is not something you have to do. Indeed, the cumulative cost of providing these over the course of a year should not be ignored.

Equally, providing a kitchen, kettle and fridge may potentially create health and safety issues. Burns, electric shocks or even food poisoning could all arise. Having said this, a sensible kitchen policy will go a long way towards mitigating this risk and you should consider including one in your staff handbook.
