Christmas parties are well known for creating issues for employers and the statistics relating to office Christmas parties often beggar belief. Research shows that half of all parties feature fights between work colleagues and a third result in allegations of sexual harassment. These incidents may take place away from the office and out of office hours, but liability may still lie with the employer – particularly if the provision of alcohol could be seen as “encouraging” such behaviour.
