Fit For Work

The Fit for Work (FfW) service is a new scheme that is being rolled out across the country. At present, it is available in all of Wales as well as a number of areas in England and it’s anticipated that by the end of 2015 all employers in England and Wales will be able to access it.

In addition to online and telephone advice, FfW allows employers to refer employees for a free occupational health assessment once they have reached four weeks’ absence due to sickness. Employers are not able to make a referral unless they have first obtained the employee’s express consent. The employee may also be referred earlier by their GP, if the GP envisages that the absence will last for four weeks. The service is provided by registered occupational healthcare professionals and is designed to facilitate a return to work for the employee.

Fit for Work is free and impartial, therefore any employer who is in a position to use it should consider doing so. As well as assisting with getting the employee back to work by way of a ‘Return to Work Plan’, the service can also save you the fees you may otherwise have paid to an occupational health advisor.

Although you may not have specific plans in place in relation to FfW,  you should consider reflecting its availability in your Staff Handbook as part of your Sickness Absence Policy.
