Rugby World Cup

Acas have issued guidance relating to the 2015 rugby union world cup, which is being held in the UK from Friday 18 September to Saturday 31 October. The guidance specifically relates to the absence and performance issues employers may face.

All companies should have policies in place that specifically deal with absence – including both sickness absence and annual leave. These policies should include the procedure for requesting and booking leave and also the requirements staff must adhere to when reporting any sickness absence. The Acas guidance states that any leave should be requested and booked in the usual way during the world cup and that any sickness absence may be monitored.

At Alpha, we recommend that companies have policies in place that regulate the use of social media and the internet during working hours, and again this is something of pertinence during the world cup. It should be made clear to employees that flouting these policies may result disciplinary action being taken against them. Let’s face it, you’re not paying your staff to spend their working time checking the scores and team news!
