The 2016 race for the White House between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton is one of the most bitterly contested in living memory. Personal accusations have been levied from both sides, with Donald Trump even stating during one debate that if he won the election his opponent would be “in jail”.

Many of your employees may have taken a keen interest in the events leading up to Tuesday’s election. However, with polls in some states remaining open until 9pm local time, the earliest possible time the election may be ‘called’ for one candidate or the other is 4am GMT. Therefore, if any of your employees are inclined to stay up late in order to see the projections come in, you could find yourself with a tired and potentially underperforming employee on your hands.

Should this happen, what can you do?

The answer is that the election of a new President, often referred to as ‘the most powerful person in the world’, is not a valid excuse for underperformance. Should an employee report for work in a sleep-deprived condition that means they are not able to properly carry out their contractual duties, you can investigate the situation with a view to instigating disciplinary action. If an employee wishes to stay up to watch events unfold that is, of course, their prerogative but your company should not be made to suffer as a result.
