Wasted Time

A publication by ACAS has highlighted research which claims that 40% of the average work day is spent dealing with internal emails. Whilst many internal emails will be highly important, there are undoubtedly a proportion that offer no business value. If this wasted time is mirrored throughout the year, by several workers, it represents an extremely costly issue.

Similarly, the research highlighted the distracting effect of every tweet or message a worker may receive during the course of the day. With employees receiving an average of 112 emails per day, in addition to personal tweets or messages, is there anything you can do to reduce the impact on your business?

Reassuringly, the answer is ‘yes’! You can implement policies that help to promote efficient working practices – and breach of these policies can lead to disciplinary action. For instance, a policy can put in writing a company’s standards with regards to maintaining a professional tone, avoiding trivial messages and prohibiting personal emails. If you wish to ban the personal use of social media during working hours, you can do that too!
