Companies House ID Verification Became Compulsory from the 18th November 2025

Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, you must verify your identity with Companies House if you are:

• A director
• The equivalent of a director – i.e. general partners and managing officers
• A director of an overseas company registered in the UK
• A Person with Significant Control (PSC)
• An Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) or
• Someone who files for a company – i.e. a company secretary

Important Timelines

All existing appointments have a 12-month review transition period to complete their ID verification process, while all new appointments will need to complete the ID Verification immediately.

This mandatory, one-time process aims to improve register activity. Failure to comply within the 12-month transition period may result in fines or prosecution.

Penalty for Not Complying – Will You Still be a Director?

Failure to complete your identity verification within the required timeframe will result in you being unable to continue acting in a registered capacity for your company.

This means you will not be permitted to act as a:

• Director
• Person with Significant Control (PSC) or
• In any other registered company role

Until your identity has been successfully verified, your ability to fulfil statutory company duties and filings will be restricted. It is essential you complete your verification promptly to avoid disruptions in your business!

Future Appointments

After the transition period ends, it’s important to note that ID verification will still be required upfront for all new appointments.

This means individuals must completed the verification process before they are officially appointed to any registered role within the company. Without verification, the appointment cannot proceed, and the individual will not be legally recognised in that position.
